Eye Of Solitude - Cenotaph (Full-Length Album - 2016) - Bandcamp Stream

Cenotaph cover art

From a bedroom solo project to one of the leading forces in the European Doom / Death field, Eye of Solitude have proven themselves to be one the most talented and creative act of this scene within a couple years only (3 albums and 5 EPs in 5 years!).

United Kingdom is welcoming another piece of doom metal art for one of the most talented death/doom metal musicians on earth . these Londoners formed in 2010 and have released three  full length albums:  Sui Caedere Full-length 2012,  Canto III Full-length 2013, Cenotaph Full-length 2016.  Over the past six years in my view, the band had the ability to express anthems have no any competitors to the listener of the darkness all over the world.Eye of Solitude was taking things back to funeral doom metal roots, definitely noteworthy.

The band's highly acclaimed fourth full length album, an ode to melancholy and introspection, "Cenotaph" was  released on the 1st of September 2016 and this is its beautiful cover bearing the mark of Giannis Nakos of Remedy Art Clown. This four-song effort delves into complex levels of sadness that resonate not only through instrumental chords but through emotional ones as well. Eye of Solitude features vocalist Daniel Neagoe (Clouds, Shape of Despair, Pantheist, etc.) as well as Chris Davies (bass), Adriano Ferrero (drums), Mark Antoniades, and Steffan Gough (guitars). Cenotaph also features a guest appearance from Yhdarl and Clouds (among a multitude of projects) member, Deha, whose background in genres like Death Doom and Funeral Doom adds a great deal to the album's third track, "This Goodbye, The Goodbye."

The other tracks on Cenotaph also exhibit similar trends. They all eclipse the proverbial ten-minute mark and all tell crestfallen stories of individual laments. Neagoe threads clean vocals and harsh roars over layered guitars and drums brimming with despondence. These sections culminate in a deeply poignant affair. Much like Skelton alluded to, Cenotaph hits on a personal level. Whether or not someone experiences sorrow to the extent that Eye of Solitude conveys is ultimately within the emotional confines of the listener. What was personally the most striking feature of this album was how much I was able to grasp the sorrow it imparted. Sadness is a complex emotion to comprehend and to grapple it so swiftly was a fulfilling victory of sorts.

Mixing elements of Dark Metal, Black Metal, Gothic Metal or even Avantgarde and Traditional (Epic) Doom Metal to the basic Doom / Death formula, Eye of Solitude has no creative boundaries, adding new shades of black with each and every release, expanding the darkening of this Universe until it'll reach it's ultimate... Doom.

Media Praise

"Their combination of Death Doom and Funeral Doom has resulted in one of the most exhilarating releases this column has featured this year. Take some time to sit with the album. It is a very beautiful and emotionally charged album that is worthy of the time, money and emotional investment." - Metal Injection

"This is truly one of the most beautiful Death/funeral doom metal  I have ever listened and an absolutely highlight for metal in 2016 . It’s honestly hard to explain how majestic and truly powerful this music really is. With repeated listens, I feel this album has become even more relevant with age." - Review From  A Solitary Room (Overall Score: 9/10).

"Musically Cenotaph is so intricate it's one of those albums that you'll pick up something new each time you listen to it which I guarantee I'll be doing often. I've only had the album a short time so I've only given it a couple spins but it's downright amazing. You'll be hard pressed to find a better funeral doom album this year. Honestly this album is total Amaze-Balls!" - Thy Demons Bescribblin (Overall Score: 5/5).

"Cenotaph is a new small masterpiece, and can easily compete with the best releases from the funeral doom genre. Let there be no doubt that Eye of Solitude is the best funeral doom band of the moment." - Murmure Metal (Overall Score: 90/100).
