BIOGRAPHY
Mgła means "Fog" in Polish. It is pronounced as "mgwa". is a Polish two-piece black metal band. It was started in 2000, in Kraków, by Mikołaj "M." Żentara.
Have been performing live since after the release of 'With Hearts Toward None'. For this, they are using a session guitarist and a session bassist for their performances.
Using rather rough and organic form of expression within the genre. Reason is personal aesthetic preference and conviction that this type of sound can fulfill the vision the most. Conceptual content ranges from nihilism to mysticism and provides comments rather than statements. Using layered compositions and highly elaborate melodies, Mgła give a fresh and unique perspective to their style of black metal without straying too far from its' roots.
Mgła has not performed live for approx. first 10 years of existence and operated as studio project only. This changed in 2012 and we since then we’ve been performing roughly once per month. Primary reason for playing live is will to perform music in complete band setting. Attempt was made after Kriegsmaschine essentially became a studio project; roles switched as Kriegsmaschine used to operate as “band” and Mgła as “project”. Number of live performances is somehow limited, yet still significantly larger than originally expected. This is simply due to much higher interest that anticipated. Presentation of Mgła live is simple to the point of unattractive. We do not use any symbolism or other “hints” how to interpret as most natural response is the most welcome. Everyone is encouraged to think for themselves.
There are also two unreleased demos: "Northwards" (2000) and "Necrotic" (2001) (1. Necrotic (07:50) 2. Shiny Summer's Warmth (05:59))
Over the last fifteen years, they have released several EPs, but only two prior full length length albums, and none before 2008. After their highly acclaimed 2012 release of With Hearts Toward None, Mgla finally began performing live, using a session guitarist and bassist on stage. Their performance at Maryland Deathfest in 2014 will be an exclusive U.S. appearance.
Of all the conceptual themes that form the subject matter of the black metal universe, one of the more intriguing is that of nihilism. The stylistic musical elements of the genre lend themselves naturally to empty bleakness of these beliefs. Long using such topics as inspiration, Mgła has come forth in 2015 and released their most impressive work to date in Exercises in Futility, escalating them to the pinnacle of the black metal world.
