Trials is a Chicago-based independent thrash metal band with death and progressive metal influences, their latest effort "This Ruined World" was released on the 24th of July, 2015 and it contains nine tight and diverse high-quality songs. The band has developped a distinct style, which is very riff-driven.
The great thing about Trials is how their sound can appeal to such a wide variety of listeners, yet never feels compromised or watered-down. There’s pieces of death, thrash, and heavy metal crafted into a feeling that is modern yet timeless. Another strong but potentially divisive aspect to This Ruined World is the production. Refreshingly free from the clinical restraints of typical modern metal productions, This Ruined World is armed with a raw and organic sound featuring clean yet biting tones. It might not suit all tastes, but it’s a nice change from the standard norm.
Trials delivers on their promise in a big fucking way here, equipped with a fresh and catchy thrash sound that demands repeat listens and deserves wider attention. This Ruined World is a killer album through and through and if the metal world is just, it should catapult Trials onto bigger and better things.
In summary, Trials‘ straight-forward and riff-based, but diverse approach to music is what got me, while their is superlative modern metal which mixes elements of thrash, death, traditional metal and comes up with something technical, progressive and accessible.
This Ruined This World gets better and better with every listen. If you’re into bands like Machine Head and Sylosis or are keen on listening to a plain great thrash/death metal album, this is something worth checking out. And take your time – at least for me, this album wasn’t “love at first listen”, but has gradually become an album I really enjoy.
