Blot - (2009 - 2015) [ Full Discography] - Bandcamp Stream

BIOGRAPHY
The band's name means (Originally Heathen) "Sacrifice" in Scandinavian. Blot is a viking/black  band that was founded back in 2007 in Kristiansand, Norway. The band consists of the trio Ruben Gentékos (guitar, vocals), Bengt Orstad (guitar) & Jan Åge Lindeland (vocals).

They released an EP in 2009 and have finally released their debut album named "Ilddyrking" ("Worship Of Fire") in October 14, 2015. They are a unsigned band, but (But will soon release several tracks digitally through Chaos Productions).

It's not a massive discovery that Norway is an absolute champion in producing good black metal bands. However, it still makes me excited when something like Blot comes along. With their debut album, Ilddyrking, the band takes on the proven yet quite impressive approach to music.

Ilddyrking seems to be an album that puts its message through straight away. That's a definite advantage as it can clearly classify the band and what they want to achieve. There is certainly a Norwegian feel to it which in terms of viking black metal, is for me imperative. The band strongly draws inspiration from the Norwegian metal roots but their inventiveness is noticeable in every song.

It's not difficult to find any reasons why Ilddyrking is an outstanding album. The short acoustic intro takes into the unconquered land of Blot viciously attacking you from the very start. The traditional perspective of vocals strongly remind me of Taake's Hoest but this gives the overall feel much more fury. Also, several folk references and tranquil melodies act as a perfect addition to the overall aggression of Ilddyrking. My definite favourite, Fimbulwinter, is a proper black metal track which brings the atmosphere of a ruthless war. I think that this song is a trademark of the band indicating what they are all about. Vikings on the loose are absolutely stepping in and spreading their rage in Fimbulwinter!

Production of Ilddyrking stands out as well. Everything seems to be very crisp and audible. I think it makes the album approachable even for someone a bit skeptical of more viking black metal tunes. They know what they are doing and proving it on their debut album is an immediate success in my opinion.

Also, as a great surprise, my beloved Dissection song has been covered! Where Dead Angels Lie is a quite challenging track to be approached but I must say that Blot did not ruin it at all. They gave it a nice Blot touch and interpreted it in their own way which sounds thrilling. This is what I call a superior supplement of an excellent debut album!

They set the bar reasonably high as for the debut album. I really do hope it's a sign of the bright future for Blot with a number of great releases to come. Ilddyrking is a foretaste of Blot's potential and excellent musicianship that, I hope, will soon be appreciated by the broader audience. (Originally written for The Goat Tavern: http://www.thegoattavern.net).

The songs that constitute «Ilddyrking» are all quite diverse and dynamic. The tempos vary, the riffs and melodies are catchy and evoke a sense of the sublime, the sound is punchy and heavy, and the band as a whole sounds tight and focused. While the vocals could have been slightly more varied, the album as a whole is highly atmospheric and nicely arranged. It is neither boring nor tedious in any way. Sure, «Ilddyrking» is not exactly innovative as such, but the band has a sound and an identity of its own, which is more than one can say about a lot of other bands out there today. By the way, the album closer is a cover of Dissection's «Where Dead Angels Lie», which, although not fantastic, is a decent (re)interpretation of that old classic tune.

There is a lot of talent and potential on display here, and it will be interesting to follow this band in the future. «Ilddyrking» already sounds refined and massive, and this is the band's debut album we are talking about here, for crying out loud. Who knows what these guys might accomplish in the years to come? If Viking metal/black metal is your thing then I suggest that you immediately check this release out. It should be available digitally as well by the time you read this. ( Originally written for The Eternal Terror Webzine: http://www.eternal-terror.com/reviews/index.php?id=4953&type=B).

Irreversible Mechanism - Infinite Fields (Full-Length Album - 2015) - Bandcamp Stream

BIOGRAPHY
As probably one of the most critically acclaimed albums released in 2015, IRREVERSIBLE MECHANISM's "Infinite Fields" is a massive, epic construction of blistering Death Metal, comparable to MECHINA's "Acheron" (and as a throwback) THE FACELESS's "Akeldama." This is a technical, industrial, and symphonic Metal masterpiece and is likely to rank on a lot of peoples' top ten lists for the year. Hailing from Minsk, Belaruse, this trio of concept album masterminds seemed to know exactly what the hell they wanted to do when they set out to write and record new music.

The group features ex-The Faceless drummer Lyle Cooper, guitarist Vladislav Nekrash and vocalist and bassist Yaroslav Korotkin, and they dropped Infinite Fields on Mar. 31, 2015. The album  also feature artwork done by the legendary Par Olofsson who has already provided his incredible art to innumerous bands such as Exodus, Aborted, Immolation and Onslaught, contributes to making the whole album even more captivating., which has recently done art for Beyond Creation and Psycroptic, the whole affair was mastered by Necrophagist's Sami Raatikainen and was released by Blood Music!

Belarus based progressive/technical death metal trio Irreversible Mechanism unveiled their debut full length album entitled “Infinite Fields” via Blood Music record label. A blasting album in which Technical Death Metal is masterfully merged with melodic orchestrations and symphonic elements.  Irreversible Mechanism snagged former “The Faceless” drummer Lyle Cooper for their latest opus.Their latest studio effort is consist with nine tracks with approximate 40 minute running time.

In before when they started hitting web with their manifestation those tracks destroyed and mesmerized with the progressiveness and technicality and easily became one of the anticipated progressive/technical death metal release of 2015. ”Infinite Fields” alloyed with very unique kind of Progressive/technical death metal music with difficult, esoteric melody and atmospheric vibe.Their musical level of complexity, progressiveness, technicality  and obscurity is phenomenal and appreciable. This album sounds so authentic, mature it's hard to believe it's only their debut album.

Kauan - Sorni Nai (Full-Length Album - 2015) - Bamdcamp Stream

BIOGRAPHY
Kauan is an atmospheric doom metal/post-rock band from Chelyabinsk, Russia formed in 2005. Kauan's name stems from the Finnish language, and many of the band's lyrics are in Finnish.

Kauan was started by Anton Belov in February 2005. They started out as a folk metal, black metal, doom metal band, later moving on to more of an ambient and post-rock sound with doom and folk metal elements with their second album, and now could even be considered a folk rock band.

In September 2006, Lubov Mushnikova joined the band as a violin player. The band has worked with other people as well but none of them eventually fit the band’s conception. During the recording of their first album, some session members were invited to play cello and saxophone.

After the release of the first album, Lumikuuro (BadMoodMan Music, 2007), Alexander Borovich left the band. By then, Kauan have recorded their second album Tietäjän Laulu, which was released by BMM Music in the late 2008.

In late 2009, Kauan released their third album, Aava Tuulen Maaon on Firebox Records/BadMoodMan Music . At that point, the band changed their genre to atmospheric folk music, post-rock with sad and melancholic variations which has always been a distinctive mark of Kauan.

In 2010, Belov and his wife, vocalist Alina "Witch_A" Roberts (formerly of Inferno and Semargl), released a full-length album on Firebox Records with his other project Helengard.

On 26 June 2011, Kauan's fourth album, Kuu.., was released by Avantgarde Music. The album featured a strong post-rock/ambient sound with elements of doom metal. Mushnikova left the band later in 2011.

Belov assembled a full band lineup in 2013, including Roberts as keyboardist as well as bassist Alex Vynogradoff (also of Vin De Mia Trix), viola player Anatoly Gavrylov and drummer Anton Skrynnik (ex-Dimicandum). This lineup performed on Kauan's fifth album, Pirut, released by Blood Music on 15 December 2013.

The prolific Russian/Ukrainian post rock/doom outfit returns with their brilliant seventh album! "Sorni Nai" - the band's most mature work to date - is a concept album that references and expands upon territory explored in their previous work ("Pirut"), showcasing a single 52-minute long track, twisting through lush string orchestrations into sinister and operatic doom metal.

The album's concept focuses on the infamous Djatlov Pass Incident. In 1959, nine Soviet hikers went on a trip to reach Mt. Ortorten in the Ural Mountains. None of the hikers were seen alive again. Their bodies were found a mile from their campsite, missing their skis, shoes, and coats while braving -30°F weather. Two of them had fractured skulls, two had major chest fractures, and one was missing her tongue. Investigators listed the cause of death as "a compelling natural force," and the case was immediately closed.

The artwork by Sonia Melnik is a panorama displaying known imagery of the hikers skiing towards their destination.

The album's title references the golden goddess of the Ural Mountains' Mansi region. The band otherwise continues in its tradition of singing exclusively in poetic Finnish, the only known non-native-speaking band outside of Finland to attempt lyrics in the unique Nordic language, one of the most complex in the world.

Even though the album is intended to be one single track, the band has split it up into chapters for the CD release, which are titled in the native Mansi language.

The band makes an intelligent music based on viola, choirs, slow piano melodies with post doom metal influence, ambient vibes and neo-classic taste.

Erudite Stoner - Erudite Stoner (Full-Length Album - 2015) - Bandcamp Stream

BIOGRAPHY
Erudite Stoner is a one man acoustic project  from Brazil with influencies of post-rock, shoegaze, classical guitar, stoner/sludge,doom and black metal. Erudite means scholarly and this gentleman certainly knows his way around a fretboard.

In December last year the man released his self-titled, debut album in the self-distribution. The nine-track journey takes you through some very thought provoking moments. There are solemn and dark undertones throughout this album where we found ourselves taking a hard swallow. The beauty, however, lies in the consistent shining light that emanates throughout the beautiful melodies. The solid production provides a very soft and intimate feel, where you can hear quality squeaks in the chord changes that will send chills down your spine.

All nine tracks are very solid. The album maintains a conservative consistency not taking too many risks. Perhaps our favorite tracks entail  "Ride to Nowhere" and the seven minute wonder "Roads to Somewhere" where both tracks intertwine with a central melody. The change-ups on both these tracks are down right inspiring. Check-out the momentum and energy that builds within "Ride to Nowhere."  Instrumental in nature, the music is a different take on the genre, focusing on the softer moments of post-metal bands. Arrangments focus on classical guitar, but at times still carry an inherent heaviness to them.

Erudite Stoner is an album that we will find very good use for over the years. Its ability to lower our blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels should not be discounted. This is a very heartfelt piece of work that you will enjoy putting on be it during that cold Winter night, that crisp Fall morning, or that breezy summer day on the lake.

Although this album he presents himself as Metal listeners, it soon becomes clear that the worlds he targeted, are not in the dark folk, instead seeks instrumental Acoustic Guitar plate for wide open spaces, towards acoustic stoner rock and Indie Nostalgia and escapism dominate. Conclusively, warm melodies are developed without wanting something out here. The route is the goal.

Katingation - 2 Legs 1 Arm (Full-Length Album - 2013) - Bandcamp Stream

BIOGRAPHY
The Katingation is a trio of the province of Kuando Kubango, and this EP released on May 31, 2013. On the album, the listener is faced with elements of African culture, as well as remnants of its history.

The work is to focus the discussion on the death metal appropriation - sub-genre characterized by "negative emotions" such as hatred, aggression and nihilism - in "peripheral" areas, seeking to understand how this sub-genre is used to re- mean social conflict scenarios and insecurity, marked by poverty, violence, death and war. It analyzes the album "2 legs one arm" released through the internet by the Angolan group Katingation in 2013.

The first thing that calls attention concerning Katingation band and its existence has been questioned in forums focused on the subgenres and, according to informants Angolan metal scene, between the bands themselves circuit, since the group has never been seen in presentations to live or in meetings of local musicians, and their origin is a mystery to the members of the scene.

However, in posts on the social network, the traces of the band, including the [alleged] physical condition of its members allow us to make preliminary observations about the group - from the cover and the title of the album, which They suggest the mutilation of leg two members as a consequence of the Civil War:

"We are pleased with the record. It took a lot to write the songs cuz the drummer was recording double pedal so with one leg" (KATINGATION FACEBOOK, 2013, online).

Formed in the province of Kuando Kubango, the trio of vocalist Ngombe Semedo, bassist and guitarist Katito Mutungula and drummer Tchissakwe Matisse features nine songs, sung in English, traveling through varied interpretations of death, violence and other situations of threat social well-being in the local context.

The opening track, "Kijibanganga",  the listener and transported to a soundscape evoking a scenario of violence, with sounds of gunfire and noise of elephants and other large mammals on the run. It seems that the instrumental composition represents the extinction of elephants and rhinos, caused by illegal hunting for ivory trade  no problem only in Angola but in other countries of the continent, thus triggering, in the opening, elements that make up the transnational dimension of the identity of musicians, supporting the observation of Hall that "cultural identities are points of identification, the unstable points of identification or suture, which are made within the discourse of history and culture. No one essence, but positioning ".

This first identitario positioning articulate other, more connected to national and local aspects, which can be seized in the following analyzed songs. In the eighth song, "Enter the township of death", for example, the fusion of tribal sounds to the weight of death metal in two minutes and four seconds of duration, composes the scenario of approximation with death in the sphere of slums  the Luanda capital. "Enter the township of death, where the sun is black, and the sky is dead" announce the guttural of Ngombe.

More than just shelter residents with low economic and social level, constituted the slums of local resistance to colonialism Portuguese during the movements of independence at the beginning of the 1960s. Verses "Enter the township of death, where the dirt starts, and the world ends" talk about the huts built in those areas of reddish sands of Luanda. These constructions are homes of individuals expelled from the city center due to urban expansion or the new immigrants. Thus, the representation of this social sphere earns an "oppressive" air passages: "Enter the township of death, where the wind do not blow, and heat reigns"  and "Enter the township of death, where you ' ll live, die and die again."

In the sixth track, "Machimbombo Flat Tire",  a third aspect of identitarias and exploited positions: the local man facing death on a daily basis from the lack of investment in transport and urban mobility. From Trio experience with means of public transportation [machimbombo], the letter refers the force of chance and risk in the displacement of residents between African provinces of Benguela, Huambo, the capital Luanda and Kuando Kubango. "On the path to Benguela, The Machimbombo had a flat tire," "On the path to Huambo, The Machimbombo had a flat tire," "On the path to Luanda, The Machimbombo had a flat tire." "On the path to Kuando Kubango, The Machimbombo had a flat tire."

Between passages of screaming and growling vocals, the listener is transported to the disorder and the insecurity faced by people who use these public transport means: tires stick and vehicles "break" or travels overcrowded; the conditions of roads and vehicles themselves are precarious; speeding drivers puts passengers at risk, transforming thus the use of machimbombo in one of the routine experiences of approximation with danger: "The boredness starts to settle among us, As we walk towards our destination: death."

Finally, in the ninth band, the social risk narrated and another, the presence of landmines, "planted" in African territories during the Civil War: "Spoils of war in your backyard Do not step over your crops.".

Kuando Kubango, province of group origin, served as the first base of UNITA. Verses discourse on this social context the interpretation of the strategic position of this territory in armed conflicts in the past and the presence of minefields these days: "Landmines, seeds of death, Enjoy the fireworks."  Thus, the song the group can be heard as a witness of how Angola faced with remnants of his violent past: "Do not take your legs for granted, They may go out out with a bang."

All the songs so maps various aspects of urban life and the relationship of the people with its recent past of wars and struggles; and points to the way the marks of the death metal genre may be appropriate as a means of representation of the Angolan identity, with songs whose narratives connect the present to the past of this nation, linking the livings of the musicians collective memory.

Thus, if the memory is understood as a process - always in dispute and reinvention - in which subjects are positioned, and collectively build narratives that give meaning to this; and that the means of communication and medias - the music included among them - act as actors who produce "frameworks", the appropriation of death metal in a peripheral social space can demonstrate a specific case of this process.

In this regard, as was anticipated in the introduction, the hatred, aggression and other "negative emotions" of death metal are channeled not in the direction of nihilism, but as productive elements, which act as way of construction of the catalysts for a share of the Angolan youth . The death metal and therefore driver affections and convening of a group, that maybe - it is worth asking - do not identify with the more culturally legitimized musical genres in the country, such as Semba and Kuduro, demonstrating how identities encompass different ways in which the subjects are positioned by the narratives of the past.

This paper aims to address the appropriation of death metal in peripheral scenarios, based on perspective that relates the cultural codes of the subgenres to reinterpretation processes of episodes of social conflicts, violence and wars.

From the brief analysis of an album of the Angolan band Katingation, conducted exploratory way, were collected some clues that point to two sets of issues.

The first set of tracks with respect to investigation of the metal genre and construction of Angola death metal scene. With more questions than answers about this little visible scene in the global scenario, we sought to demonstrate that the Katingation band keeps true to some of the "rules of genre," as those concerning the sound marks metal, convened through the guttural and aggressive vocals, the distortions, the rhythmic speed, the lyrics sung in English and utilization of chords "classics" of death metal. On the other hand, "redirects" the hatred and aggression of the letters to reinterpret the recent memory of his parents about the Civil War and the everyday social and violence conflicts, turning thus nihilism without apparent target of death global metal production in a narrative of local meanings.

The second set of issues concerns the relationship of cultural products with the collective memory. In this case, the track and that musical genres can also function as "memory places", which, alongside monuments to, dates, historical characters and literature, consolidate the sense of belonging and negotiate social boundaries between groups.

In this sense, it proposes and think this album as a testimony that contributes to the construction of a "historic milestone" in the form of a memorial for social conflict victims. Memorial no longer represented by a physical monument, but by memories "dematerialized and reconfigurable" - and perhaps ephemeral - conveyed by the album on the Internet, and whose meanings continue to resonate after the conclusion of this text, calling the new "wiretapping dedicated ", to be recorded in future work.
